Some time ago, as I was preparing Milmoto for this trip, I spotted a problem with my rear wheel. Indeed, I'd recently changed it, after cracking the rim on the tough trails of Kazakhstan. But since then, I've been noticing some "swaying" as soon as I exceed 100 km/h. These rear-end movements were still acceptable when unladen, but loaded as we were, they could become dangerous. So I tackled the problem, with a wide range of opinions. Between tire pressure, worn bearings or poor balancing... I tried everything. And yet, on Thursday morning when we set off, the bike was still just as "unstable" (if not more so).

So we decided to stop off in Munich, the birthplace of BMW. It seemed obvious to me that we'd be able to find a specialist in "old Germans" who'd be able to put his finger on our problem. And so we did!

We were immediately advised to go to the " BMW Motorrad Zentrum München "This is the official repair center. A warm, luxurious welcome, where you are made to wait in a small lounge with a cup of coffee. Shortly afterwards, here I am, explaining my problem to a mechanic. He asks to see the machine, checks the play in the various bearings, weighs the wheel, feels the tires... and says to me with a satisfied look " I've found your solution! ... Drive slowly. "

He explains that the wobble comes from my winter tires, whose soft studs tend to crush on the asphalt. He knows all about this problem, and tells me that they have the same problem here on more modern machines. So we're going to have to take our time, even on German freeways!

He left, smiling, shaking my hand and wishing us a safe journey.

  1. Hello! this anecdote makes me smile... I had the same thing happen to my 90/6... which is now riding with your rear wheel, the same one that covered the tracks of Kazakhstan... and yes, I'm the one who bought it from you and reconditioned it at a craftsman's workshop in the south of France ;-) Well, my good old 900 series 6 is currently waiting for a frame, front wheel, headlight, rim, speedo etc... because a hit-and-run driver cut her off and she's in bad shape... but I'll bring her back to life again!!!!

  2. Mama, excellent post!!! I am not a fan of seafood, but tried calamiri once in Pondicherry and liked it.. The photos and other description reminded me of what i had had there... the Surmai masala fry really looks delicious... I am still hanging on your offer to take me to good hotels once im there!!!! :)
