Spotted rattlesnakes are found from southern Nevada to Baja California, Arizona and northern Sonara. This distribution coincides with the Mojave and Sonoran deserts.
In southern California, the species is most common in rocky, inland terrain. It also inhabits rocky hills and alluvial deposits in the desert. It is rarely seen in coastal areas.
